Professor Aladar Szalay is an internationally recognized scientist known for pioneering the use of live microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses, to diagnose and treat cancer. He founded Genelux Corporation in 2001 and led the company through groundbreaking research and clinical development programs, including early human trials of the oncolytic vaccinia virus GL-ONC1. Under his leadership, more than 80 cancer patients participated in clinical studies exploring novel cancer imaging and therapeutic technologies. In parallel with his industry leadership, Professor Szalay has maintained an extensive academic career focused on whole-body imaging and oncolytic virotherapy. He currently leads research programs at the University of Würzburg and serves as Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California San Diego. Throughout his career, he has held senior academic appointments at institutions including Loma Linda University, University of Alberta, Cornell University, and the California Institute of Technology. Professor Szalay has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications, filed over 170 patent applications, and holds more than 90 issued patents. Widely respected as both a scientist and mentor, he has trained more than 150 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. His contributions to science and biotechnology have earned numerous international honors, including the Wilhelm Exner Medal and the Alexander von Humboldt Prize.
